Ken Johnson, Jr. Selected as MIT’s Director of Communications, Promotions and Marketing

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT Department Head and Director of Athletics Julie Soriero announced the hiring of Ken Johnson, Jr. as Director of Communications, Promotions and Marketing for the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER). Johnson joins the MIT staff after five years at Assumption College.

I would also like to thank everyone at Assumption for their support and commitment over the last five years and I will always value the friendships that I have made during my time in Worcester."

As the Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications at Assumption, Johnson was responsible for the execution of a comprehensive promotional effort for each of the College's 24 intercollegiate athletic programs. He further developed the department's presence through the use of social media, the department's web site and the promotion of the student-athletes to a variety of local and regional media outlets. Johnson also oversaw the department's logo licensing program agreement with Learfield Licensing following the development of an athletics branding program, which he directed during the spring of 2013.

As part of the improvements in athletic communications, Johnson oversaw a complete redesign of the athletic department's web site, www.AssumptionGreyhounds.com. He also worked to develop an undergraduate internship program through the College's business and English departments, with the program beginning in the fall of 2012. Most recently, Johnson oversaw the creation of a new athletics mascot, which was unveiled at the 2014 Homecoming football game. The mascot was designed by Phoenix Design Works and constructed by Street Characters.

In addition to his work in athletic communications, Johnson also supervised the athletic marketing effort for the College's athletic programs. He helped develop an athletic marketing intern position that began in the Spring of 2013, which works with the athletic marketing team in increasing the promotion and marketing of the intercollegiate programs both on and off campus.

Prior to his arrival at Assumption, Johnson served as the Director of Athletic Communications at Saint Anselm College for six years. During his tenure he was responsible for the media relations operation for the college's 20 intercollegiate athletic teams. This included managing the athletic department web site, producing press releases and game stories, compiling statistics for all home contests and assisting in home game management for over 200 events per season. Johnson also redesigned the Saint Anselm athletic department web site and developed SaintAnselmHawks.tv, in conjunction with the Pack Network, for the broadcast of all home football, basketball and ice hockey games.

An avid golfer and runner, Johnson has completed three marathons, including the 2005 New York City Marathon. A 1999 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Johnson has a bachelor of science degree in sport management.
