Tim Mertz joined the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation as the Director of Recreational Sports on April 1, 2012. He oversees the department’s recreational operations that provide extensive opportunities to MIT students and staff as well as the local community.  Since joining MIT, Mertz has trademarked ENGINEERyourHEALTH™, expanded fitness outreach, broadened department and corporate partnerships and improved member retention and growth. 

Prior to MIT, Mertz served as the Assistant Director for University Recreation at the University of Wisconsin – Stout. There he supervised a comprehensive campus recreation department that included programs in outdoor adventure, health & fitness, intramural and club sports programs and aquatics. While at UW-Stout, Mertz was instrumental in the planning and opening of the first 24/7 fitness facility within UW-System.

As an active volunteer within several professional associations, Mertz has contributed at the Board level for the Association of Outdoor Recreation & Education (AORE) from 2008-2011; as a Director At-Large, Vice-President and President. He is a recipient of the prestigious Jim Rennie Leadership Award, helped develop the infrastructure to hire and employ the AORE’s first Executive Director and was instrumental in long-term financial planning for the Association while serving on the Financial Advisory Committee. Additionally, Mertz is serving a three-year term on the NIRSA Services Corporation Board of Directors (2017-2020) and is a lifetime member of NIRSA.

Mertz is a regular presenter at state, regional and national conferences, co-chaired the NIRSA Region 1 Conference in Boston in 2014 and actively contributes to several annual industry leadership summits around the country.    

Mertz is a graduate of Southern Illinois University with a B.S. in Recreation and a M.S. in Exercise Physiology.
