CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT rifle team opened its 2010-11 campaign against the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday. The Engineers were able to come away with a split against the Leopards' coed team, capped by a close victory in the Smallbore competition, 2149-2143. Tech fell in the air rifle portion of the match by a score of 2210-2161. MIT also picked up a win over the Wentworth women's team in air rifle, 2161-1956.
Nigel Kojimoto led all shooters on the afternoon, posting the highest smallbore and air scores among both teams. Kojimoto had three efforts of at least 94 points en route to a total of 550 in smallbore. Elizabeth Phillips was also impressive for the Cardinal and Gray in smallbore, registering at least 89 points on five or six shots, including a team-high 97 on her first attempt. Lionel Sotomayor (536) and Timothy Jenks (519) rounded out the smallbore scoring for Tech.
In air rifle, Kojimoto again impressed, closing out his day with four straight shots of 94 or more points, for a total of 563. Phillips and Giulia Pantalone each recorded scores of 544 for the Cardinal and Gray while Jenks had the squad's fourth-best total with 510 points.
MIT will return to action in two weeks, welcoming John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Wentworth and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to the DuPont range for a two-day competition beginning on Friday, October 15 at 5:00 p.m.
