Rifle Slips Past VMI In Season Opener
Sept. 29, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT rifle opened the 2007 season with a solid victory against the Virginia Military Institute, Saturday, in Cambridge. Trumping the Keydets in the aggregate total, 4338-4335, the Engineers avenged last season's loss in which VMI out-dueled the Cardinal and Gray in both guns.
MIT secured the season-opening win behind a tremendous effort in air rifle. The Engineers scored 2230 point to finish comfortably ahead of VMI's top unit which posted a score of 2155. A second entry by the Keydets netted a total score of 1904.
Sophomore Emily Houston authored the highest score of the day in air with a total of 575. The Engineers also received a solid debut from rookie Joe Lane, who finished second on the club with a score of 563. MIT rounded out its air rifle contingent with personal records by Jennifer Paek (552) and Sarah Miles (540).
The Keydets topped the Engineers in smallbore with Chelsea Kosecki and JM Leenhouts finishing first and second, respectively, to pace the attack. Houston served as MIT's top marksman in the event, shooting 561 to finish four points off the total set by Kosecki.
Lane finished second for the Engineers in smallbore as well. The freshman shooter shrugged off tough scores in the standing position to post the highest score of the afternoon on his final target card. Posting 98 out of 100 on his second attempt in the kneeling position, Lane finished with a score of 537. Paek (508) and Miles (502) capped the scoring for MIT, which fell to VMI, 2180-2108.
The Engineers did secure a victory in smallbore over VMI's second team, leaving MIT with a record of 2-0 in air and 1-1 in smallbore after the first weekend of competition.
