Sailors Cruise to Third at Crews Regatta

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – B-Division skipper Leigh Casadaban and crew Charles Field were the driving forces behind host MIT’s strong third-place finish out of 16 entries at the Crews Regatta on Sunday. With a west-to-northwest breeze of three to seven knots making for a glorious day along the Charles River as temperatures veered to the mid 70’s, Casadaban and Field finished second in their circuit with four top-five slots among the five rounds for an astonishing score of 13. The duo placed atop the board in the third and fifth rounds, while also placing third, second, and sixth in the other tilts.

Sophomore skipper Roberto Melendez and freshman crew Jason Pier made a dazzling comeback to finish eighth in the A-Division. The pair posted second and fourth place marks in the last two rounds, after finishing 11th, 12th, and 13th in the first three.

University of New Hampshire won the event with a score of 41, followed by Brown University (45), MIT (55), U.S. Coast Guard Academy (64), and University of Connecticut (68). The day is considered an opportunity for regular crews to take the lead for an entire regatta.

A-Division skipper Molly Bernstein and crew David Alfonso took fifth place out of 14 teams in their circuit as the Engineers finished 10th overall at the Freshman Intersectional Regatta hosted by Boston University. Brown University won the 10-race event.

The Cardinal and Gray also placed seventh of 12 entries at the Hap Moore Team Race hosted by event-winner Boston College.
