CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior captain and skipper Toan Tran-Phu and freshman crew Alix de Monts were named U.S. Sailing's College Sailors of the Week for their outstanding performance in this past weekend's Longfellow Bridge Invitational at Harvard University. Tran-Phu and de Monts waved off winds ranging from 7-20 knots to win the 'B' circuit as the Engineers placed second overall to Boston College.
Tran-Phu, who hails from Cary, N.C., had sailed only a few times before joining the MIT squad as a freshman. Embraced as an excellent teacher of the sport, Tran-Phu has spent time sailing with all of MIT's top crews. de Monts, of Los Altos, Calif., a member of the Engineers' women's soccer team, joined the squad this spring and has raced with Tran-Phu since the beginning of March.
With a score of 49, Tran-Phu and de Monts, finished in the top five in all but three of the 13 races and won five rounds in last weekend's event.
