CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT sailing was a force to be reckoned with this past weekend as the nationally-ranked No. 18 coed team captured third place at the Thompson Trophy while the women's squad finished ninth at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Championship.
Juniors Andrew Sommer (Duxbury, Mass.), Steven Drapcho (Newtown, Pa.), and Mark Van de Loo (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished third in the A Division on the strength of nine top-five finishes in 18 rounds of competition. Sommer and Van de Loo won the 13th race while Sommer teamed up with Drapcho for a trio of second-place rankings and a third-place finish in the first rotation. Senior skipper Eamon Glackin (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Kelden Pehr (Seabrook, Texas) also claimed third place for the Engineers as they recorded 11 top-five placements in the B Division. The duo clinched the top spot in the sixth race, was the runner-up in the fifth and 10th rounds, and ranked third in the 12th and 17th rotations.
At the NEISA Women's Championship, senior Katii Gullick (Portland, Maine), sophomore Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.), and junior Soraya Shehata (Bethesda, Md.) finished ninth in the A Division courtesy of eight top-10 finishes. Highlights for the trio included victories in the 15th and 16th races to go along with third-place performances in the third and 14th rounds. Freshman Chloe Lepert (Belmont, Calif.), senior Steph Tong (Hong Kong), and freshman Laura Dunphy (Shelburne, Vt.) captured 11th in the B Division as they cracked the top 10 in 12 of the 17 races. The Cardinal and Gray broke into the top five by ranking fourth in the second and third rounds and claiming fifth place in the 15th rotation.
In the nine-team field of the Priddy Trophy, freshmen Zack Drach (Wilmington, N.C.) and Samantha Albright (Madison, Conn.) finished second in the sixth race, fourth in the fourth round, and fifth in the third and fifth rotations.
Next up for MIT will be the Midweek Tech Invite on Thursday, April 26 followed by the George Morris Trophy and the New England Team Racing Championship to be held this weekend.
