CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior crew Steph Tong (Hong Kong) and junior skipper Andrew Sommer (Duxbury, Mass.) earned spots on the All-New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Coed Team as announced by the league earlier this week. Tong was voted to the crew first team while Sommer was a second-team pick for the skippers.
The duo competed in 14 events together and finished in the top 10 on 11 occasions. In their second outing of the 2011-12 season, Sommer and Tong were the runner-up in the B Division of the Hatch Brown Trophy, which powered MIT to a second-place overall finish. Last month, they captured second place in the A Division of the New England Dinghy Championship as the Engineers ranked ninth. The following week at the Thompson Trophy, the pair was third in the A Division while the Cardinal and Gray secured third of 18 teams.
NEISA, the conference for MIT's sailing team, is comprised of 49 schools in New England and is one of seven district associations that make up the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). It is the second-largest component of the ICSA as the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association consists of 50 programs.
