Sailing Announces Class of 2016

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT sailing team will welcome eight new members for the 2012-13 season, co-head coach Matt Lindblad announced. Included in the Class of 2016 are student-athletes from seven states who have recorded outstanding performances on the national stage.

"Our deepest recruiting class in several years, these student-athletes bring with them a broad range of sailing and athletic accomplishments," said Lindblad. "They are coming in to the program at a perfect time as we have excellent upperclassmen leaders to learn from along with numerous opportunities to participate in the highly competitive New England conference. Together, this class will do some very special things in college sailing during the next four years."

Marina Crowe (Swarthmore, Pa./Baldwin School)
Competed for the Shelter Island Yacht Club (N.Y.) for six summers...was a co-captain and four-year letterwinner of her high school's soccer and squash teams...major is undecided.

Christopher Ford (Millbrae, Calif./Mills High School)
Skipper and crew...Captured first place at the Buzzards Bay Regatta (2011) and Club 420 Midwinters (2012), third at the Bemis Championship (2009) and 29er US Nationals (2011), and fourth at the Orange Bowl Regatta (2012)...valedictorian...major is undecided.

Jeremy Kalas (Huntington, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall)
Crew...also competed on the cross country, wrestling, and track and field teams in high school...Siemens Competition Semifinalist...will be majoring in mathematics.

David Larson (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker)
Skipper...captain and team MVP...captured the high school nationals Mallory Cup in 2009...also competed for the San Diego Yacht Club...will be majoring in physics.

William Livernois (Newnan, Ga./Advanced Academy of Georgia/Northgate High School)
Captain of the Northgate High School Sailing Team and Lauderdale Yacht Club Laser Team...will be competing in the U.S. Youth Sailing Championship in August...three-time participant at the Orange Bowl International Regatta...raced in the Laser Radial Nationals and Laser Radial North Americans in 2011 and 2012...will be majoring in chemical engineering.

Audrey Olshefsky (White, Wash./Friday Harbor High School)
Skipper and crew...earned three varsity letters for soccer and one for basketball...valedictorian...will be majoring in biological engineering.

Joe Paggi (Bayville, N.J./Monsignor Donovan)
Skipper...captain and four-year letterwinner...finished 10th at the High School Singlehanded National Championship...ranked ninth at the 2011 Laser U.S. Youth Championship...also earned three varsity letters as a member of the indoor track and field team...will be majoring in bioengineering.

Elizabeth Zhang (Lexington, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols)
Crew...will be majoring in materials science and engineering.
