MIT Has Another Successful Weekend on the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competing in three events this past weekend, the nationally-ranked No. 9 MIT sailing team finished second and seventh at the Crews Regatta, fifth at the Professor NoRinger Regatta, and eighth at the Hap Moore Team Race. The final tune-up for the Engineers before heading into postseason action will be the Dark of Night Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 8.

The B Division boat of Brooke Winslow and junior Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) captured first place out of 13 teams at the Crew Regatta. The duo won the third rotation, captured second place three times, secured third place in the first round, and was fourth in the fifth race. In the A Division, freshmen Audrey Olshefsky (White, Wash.), Noam Buckman (Atlanta, Ga.), and Aleksandra Kalinowska claimed third place as they won the last race after finishing second through sixth in their previous outings.

MIT's second entry in the Crews Regatta saw sophomores Christina Wettersten (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Brian Belding (Woodstown, N.J.) rank fifth in the B Division. The tandem was the runner-up in the third race, finished fifth in the first and fifth rounds, and added placements of sixth, seventh, and eighth. Freshmen Alissa Borshchenko (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jamila Smith-Dell (Medford, Mass.) were 11th in the A Division as they opened the competition with an eighth-place performance and added a pair of ninth-place finishes.

Senior David Rodriguez (Tallahassee, Fla.) and freshman Kayla Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) collaborated for a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams in the A Division of the Professor NoRinger Regatta. The pair was fourth in six of the seven rotations and concluded its day by claiming sixth place. In the B Division, junior Sarah Mountjoy (Melbourne, Australia) and freshman Jordan Mlsna (Austin, Texas) were seventh overall as they ranked fourth and fifth in back-to-back races and had two seventh-place performances.

At the Hap Moore Team Race, the Engineers finished with a ledger of 0-14. Senior Philip Crain (Houston, Texas), sophomore Chloe Lepert (Belmont, Calif.), and freshmen Christopher Ford (Millbrae, Calif.) and Joe Paggi (Bayville, N.J.) were the skippers while seniors Eben Freeman (Zurich, Switzerland), Soraya Shehata (Bethesda, Md.), and Taylor Burfield (Naples, Fla.), junior Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.), and sophomore Samantha Albright (Madison, Conn.) competed as the crew.
