CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its final outings of the fall season, the No. 8 MIT women's sailing team captured eighth place at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship while the No. 16 coed squad was 11th at its own Atlantic Coast Championship this past weekend. Prior to the postseason competitions, the Engineers participated in the Dark of Night Invitational last Thursday where they secured ninth and 14th place.
Senior Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and sophomore Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan (Temple, N.H.) collaborated for a seventh-place performance out of 18 teams in the B Division of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship. The duo entered the top 10 in seven of the 11 rounds, highlighted by third place in the sixth race, fourth place in the eighth rotation, and a pair of fifth-place finishes. In the A Division, juniors Chloe Lepert (Belmont, Calif.) and Samantha Albright (Madison, Conn.) ranked 12th as they won the 10th round, were the runner-ups in the eighth race, claimed third place in the final outing, and added placements of ninth and 10th.
At the 18-team Atlantic Coast Championship, freshman Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass.) and senior Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.) captured third place on the strength of 10 top-10 finishes in the B Division. The pair won the sixth and seventh rotations, finished second in the fifth race, and came in fourth on four occasions. Senior David Alfonso (San Juan, Puerto Rico), sophomore David Larson (La Jolla, Calif.), junior Kayla Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.), and freshman Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) represented MIT in the A Division where they finished 17th. The contingent was sixth in the 12th and 14th rounds, eighth in the fifth race, 10th in the opening outing, and added three 11th-place performances.
Freshmen Nicole O'Brien (Winthrop, Mass.) and Jorlyn Le Garrec (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the "Angry Beavers" to seventh place in the B Division of the Dark of Night Invitational as they placed 12th and 14th in the two rotations that were completed. Fellow classmates Kyle Joba-Woodruff (Montreal, Quebec) and David Zhang (Boyds, Md.) claimed eighth and fifth place en route to another seventh-place finish in the A Division, helping the squad rank ninth overall. MIT's second entry, the "Engineers", was 14th as it secured the same spot in the A and B Divisions. Freshmen Moseley Andrews (Ross, Calif.) and Ellie Simonson (Bismarck, N.D.) captured sixth and eighth place in the B Division while sophomores Cali Warner (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Alissa Borshchenko (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ranked 16th and 13th in their two A-Division races.
