MIT Squash Falls to Denison at CSA Team Nationals
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - On Friday afternoon, the MIT squash team competed in the first round of the College Squash Association (CSA) National Team Championships, a 57-team championship, that are taking place at Yale University and Choate from Feb. 22-24. In its first match, the No. 34 Engineers played well and fought hard but ultimately fell to No. 39 Denison, 5-4.
In the top spot, sophomore Gray Riley (Wellesley, Mass.) fell to his opponent, 11-7, 11-5, 11-3. In the middle of the pack in a five-game thriller, sophomore Sung Won Cho (Lexington, Mass.) defeated Marshall Crane in three of the five games. He lost the first and third games, 11-7, 11-8, but came out on top in the others, 11-3, 11-7, 11-9.
Freshman Marina Crowe (Swarthmore, Pa.) played four very close games against Ben Wortham, but was able to walk away with the win. She won the first two games, 11-9, 11-5 but narrowly lost the third one, 12-10. She then won the fourth and final game, 10-8. Senior Connor Kirschbaum (Suffield, Conn.) was the only one of the Engineers to win all three of his games. Against opponent Steven Birch-Araya, he was victorious with scores of 11-2, 11-5, 11-1.
MIT will return to the courts tomorrow for the second round of the CSA National Team Championships.
