Engineers Fall In First Two Contests Of Season

Duncan Ma (No.1) and Ashwin Deshpande at (No.3) turned in their poorest performances in an intercollegiate match in three years against Wesleyan. At the bottom of the ladder MIT lost four matches 3-0. Junior Jehan Rakesh deFonseka (No.6), freshman Saad Zaheer (No.7), sophomore Jonathan Fu (No.8), and sophomore David Baumgartner (No.9) were beaten soundly by more experienced Wesleyan players.

Three other matches were much closer. Freshman Justin Stilwell showed composure under fire in his 3-1 loss (No.4). In an exhibition match (No.10), freshman Balaji Sridhar lost by just two points in the fifth game. Senior Christopher Buenrostro (No.5) lost a squeaker 3-2. Despite the loss, in only his second year playing squash, Buenrostro was extremely competitive.

The most unusual ruling occurred in freshman Saad Zaheer's match (No.7). Saad, playing very athletically, dove for a ball and hit a 'winner'. Unfortunately, his shoe came off in the dive and his opponent was awarded the point.

Against Bates College on Saturday, Nadeem Mazen was the only Engineer to put up a battle. He fell to Sean Wilkinson 9-5, 9-6, 9-0. Three of MIT's nine players did not record a point in their entire match.

The Engineers will look to pick up their first victory of the season when they host Colby College on December 4. Action is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
