CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Babson broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the fourth inning and went on to score in five of the last six innings on its way to a 12-0 victory over MIT in New England Women's and Men's baseball action this afternoon. The Beavers also received outstanding pitching from junior Kyle Lyon (Flemington, N.J.), who hurled a complete game shutout.
Babson (6-5, 2-2 NEWMAC) loaded the bases with two outs in the third inning, but MIT starter, sophomore Kiel Jindra (Oceanside, Calif.), came through with a strikeout to end the threat. The Beavers came right back in the fourth, loading the bases again, this time with one away. Junior Pat Matvichuk (Middleton, Mass.) lofted a sacrifice fly to right to score the first run, with a second run coming across when the throw from the outfield was cut off and thrown back into center field in an attempt to get the runner at second.
Babson then broke it open in the fifth, scoring four times. With one away senior Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.) drove a ball over the wall in right to start the scoring. The Beavers then scored the rest of their runs with two outs, starting it off with a double from senior Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) that was the first of four straight hits. Junior Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) brought him in with a single before scoring on a two-base hit to center off the bat of senior Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.). Junior John Botelho (Tempe, Ariz.) finished the outburst with an RBI single to right.
MIT (5-6, 0-4 NEWMAC) could never mount a serious threat against Lyon, who allowed just six hits and a walk while striking out 11. The Engineers only had two runners on just once in the game, in the bottom of the seventh when senior Bryan Macomber (Los Altos, Calif.) and sophomore Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) started the inning with back-to-back singles. Lyon came back to strikeout the next MIT hitter and then induced a double play to end the threat.
Babson went on to score a single run in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two more in the ninth. Kortmann and Miller each had three hits for the Beavers, with Kortmann driving in two and scoring three times, with Miller scoring twice. Jonasson led Babson with three RBI. Mangrum had a pair of hits to lead MIT.
MIT and Babson will complete their three-game NEWMAC series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Babson that will start at Noon.
