Jindra, Mangrum Named NEWMAC Players of the Week

WELLESLEY, Mass. – After starting the season with a three-game sweep of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference rival Clark University, the MIT baseball team swept the weekly conference awards today when the league announced that juniors Kiel Jindra (Oceanside, Calif.) and Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) were named the conference Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively.

After missing most of last season with an injury, Jindra made his first start in nearly a year in the season opener for MIT on Friday against Clark. He showed no signs that the long layoff slowed him down as he dominated the Cougars by allowing no hits and just an unearned run in six innings, striking out eight vs. just one walk. He started the game by retiring the first nine hitters in order.

Picking up where he left off last season, Mangrum had hits and scored runs in each game of the Clark series over the weekend. In game one he singled, stole third and went on to score the game-winning run to help MIT to a 4-1 win. He also started a three-run rally in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday with a single and stolen base in another 4-1 decision and then came up with two hits and three RBI in the 13-2 victory in game three as the Engineers completed the series sweep.
