Babson Outscores MIT, 14-4

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson scored at least one run in every inning in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference baseball game against MIT this afternoon as the Beavers scored a 14-4 victory over the Engineers. MIT suffered its first conference defeat this season, falling to 11-3 and 7-1 in NEWMAC play. Babson improved to 8-8 and 3-5 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Matt Grenier (Rochester, N.H.) went the distance on the mound for Babson, giving up 10 hits but limiting MIT to just the four runs as he improved to 2-1 on the season. Senior Aric Dama (Winfield, Ill.) was the starter and the victim of some errors in the field behind him as he gave up five runs, just one of which was earned, in four innings of work while striking out five.

MIT had early success in the contest, scoring four runs over the first three innings to grab a 4-2 lead. Junior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the first, freshman Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) belted a solo homer in the second, and sophomore Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) added a two-run double in the third.

Babson, however, went on to score in every inning, taking the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth on an RBI groundout by senior Michael Duffy (Milton, Mass.) and a steal of home by Senior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) to make it 5-4. Boyce and sophomore Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) led Babson with three hits each, with Boyce finishing 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs and Gonzalez adding a 3-for-4 effort with two doubles, one run scored and three driven in. Sophomore Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) each added two hits and scored three times for Babson, with MacPhee also knocking in a pair.

MIT will return home for its next game, which will also be a NEWMAC contest. The Engineers will host WPI on Friday at Briggs Field at 3:30 p.m. Babson will play tomorrow at Roger Williams at 3:30 p.m.
