Boston, Mass. (April 18) -- MIT All-American shortstop Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) was named as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for his performance last week for the Engineers. This marks the first Player of the Week honor for Filiere in 2017.
In seven games, Filiere hit a blistering .586 with 17 hits, including nine that went for extra bases as he posted four doubles, one triple and four home runs. Adding 13 runs scored and 15 RBI, Filiere had a game-winning grand slam vs. Babson on Saturday and also finished the week with five walks, four stolen bases, a 1.207 slugging percentage and a .647 on-base percentage. After today's road contest at WPI, Filiere has now reached base safely in 52 consecutive games, which is the third-longest streak in NCAA Division III history.
MIT is back in action on Wednesday afternoon as the Engineers host Roger Williams for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Fran O'Brien Field.
