May 29, 2009
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Thomas Phillips added another award to his growing resume after being voted to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Baseball Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) earlier this week. He is the first player to receive this honor since Jason Witzberger '07 in 2006 and the eighth overall.
MIT’s institutional tally now stands at 153 following its eighth award of the year, maintaining its position as the leader among Division III programs. Sophomore catcher Dan Hyatt represented the Engineers on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team.
Prior to his first national award, Phillips was tabbed to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England Division III Second Team and was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year. He will close out his playing career in New England on Thursday, June 4 at the NEIBA All-Star Game to be played at Campanelli Stadium, home of the Brockton (Mass.) Rox.
