CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After helping lead MIT to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Sunday, a pair of athletes were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team, as announced by the league this afternoon. Will Tashman was tabbed as a First Team pick while Mitchell Kates garnered a Second Team selection for the second year in a row.
Tashman has played a key role for an MIT team playing without two of its three leading scorers from a year ago, including a former All-American center, as he increased his scoring by five points per game from his freshman campaign. The sophomore leads the NEWMAC in rebounding and is tops in field goal percentage in league play. He also ranks sixth in free throw percentage and is one of the best passing big men in the conference , averaging 2.59 assists per game. A tireless defender, Tashman anchors an MIT defense that ranks second in the league in scoring defense and rebounding margin.
Kates ranks among the league leaders in a number of different categories, including scoring (fifth), assists (second), field goal percentage (sixth), steals (second) and assist/turnover ratio (third). The sophomore point guard leads an MIT offense that is tops in the league in scoring, field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage. He scored a career-high 34 points in a win over Wheaton earlier in the season, the second highest total in the league this year.
The Engineers defeated WPI to win their second conference crown in the past three years and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third consecutive season. The Cardinal and Gray will travel to Ithaca College for a first round contest on Friday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m.
