CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the third different MIT player to earn the award this season. The junior averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in a pair of road wins this week while shooting 50% from the field and making 17-of-21 free throws.
Tashman had 21 points, including 11-of-12 from the foul line, and 14 rebounds in a convincing 83-55 win at Coast Guard on Wednesday. He then added 16 points and 7 boards to help Tech survive a tough test at Babson on Saturday, winning 72-63.
Teammates Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Jamie Karraker (Morgantown, W. Va.) have each received NEWMAC weekly honors twice previously this year. The Engineers have accounted for five of the seven conference awards so far in 2011-12.
With the two victories, the Cardinal and Gray extended its program-record winning streak to 16 games and is now 4-0 in NEWMAC play. Tech will have a week to prepare for its next game, hosting WPI on Saturday, January 21 at 3:00 p.m. as part of a home double-header for the MIT men's and women's teams.
