CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 3 ranked MIT makes its first-ever appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men's basketball tournament this weekend, as the Engineers will travel to Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. for the sectional rounds on Friday and Saturday. The Cardinal and Gray will face the College of Staten Island on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. with a berth in the sectional final on the line. The host Diplomats will face Amherst College in the second game on Friday, with the winners to meet on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. for a shot at the Final Four.
At 27-1, MIT is having its best season in program history. Tech defeated Skidmore College, 62-55, in the opening round of the NCAA tournament before rolling past Farmingdale State, 83-63, in round two. Senior Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, Utah), who poured in 37 points against Farmingdale State, is averaging 21.0 points and nine rebounds per game in four postseason games. Junior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.), who was recently named the Most Outstanding of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament, nearly had a triple-double against Skidmore with 24 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.
Franklin and Marshall will be offering streaming video and live stats for all three games this weekend. Tickets will be on sale in the lobby of the Mayser Center between 12:00-2:00 p.m. and 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday and beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
