CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, Utah) and junior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) were tabbed to a pair of men's basketball all-region teams this week. Hollingsworth was a second team all-region selection by both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D3Hoops.com. Kates was a D3Hoops All-Northeast region third team honoree. MIT coach Larry Anderson was also tabbed as the Northeast region Coach of the Year by D3Hoops.
Hollingsworth, who was a first team all-region and second team All-America recipient as a sophomore, leads MIT in scoring at 17.5 points per game and is second in rebounding, collecting 6.9 caroms per contest. The senior center ranked second in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in both points per game and field goal percentage and was a first team all-conference honoree.
Kates garners his first all-region nod, landing on the D3Hoops third team. The junior point guard was the Northeast region Rookie of the Year two seasons ago. Kates leads the NEWMAC in assists and steals and has increased his scoring average to 21.3 points per game during MIT's run to the NCAA Division III Final Four.
Anderson receives his first regional Coach of the Year accolades after leading his squad to a 29-1 overall mark and an appearance in the national semifinals. Anderson, who recently earned his third NEWMAC Coach of the Year award, becomes the second coach from the conference to be recognized, joining former Coast Guard Academy head man, Pete Barry, who was tabbed in 2006-07 and 2007-08.
MIT will play the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Division III semifinals on Friday, March 16 at 8:00 p.m. in Salem, Va. The winner will advance to Saturday's NCAA championship game.
