CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) was named to the D3Hoops.com men's basketball All-America fourth team over the weekend. Kates, who was a D3Hoops All-Northeast region third team honoree, is Tech's fourth D3Hoops All-America honoree and first since Jimmy Bartolotta's 2009 national player of the year campaign.
Kates, who finished second on MIT in scoring, was at his best during the Engineers' run to the Final Four, averaging 19.4 points, 7.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds during five NCAA tournament games. For the season, the junior had 14.2 point, 5.4 assist and 4.1 rebound averages. Kates led the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in assists and steals and was sixth in scoring, while helping the Cardinal and Gray win an Institute-record 29 games, capture its second straight conference title and advance to the national semifinals for the first time in program history.
Kates and teammate Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, Utah) were tabbed to the All-Northeast region team last week, with Hollingsworth landing on the second team and Kates garnering a third team selection.
MIT fell in the Division III semifinals to eventual national champion, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 71-56, on Friday night. Tech concluded its 2011-12 campaign with a 29-2 overall mark.
