D3hoops.com Names Tashman All-American
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – For the second time in as many weeks, senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) was selected as an All-American men’s basketball player, this time by D3hoops.com. One of 25 Division III players from around to be named an All-American, Tashman was put on the second team by the publication. He is the third MIT player to earn All-America recognition by D3hoops.com, joining fellow senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Jimmy Bartolotta ’09.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) was selected to one of the highest honors in men’s basketball today as the National Association of Basketball Coaches revealed its 2013 Division III All-American teams.

Tashman Selected to NABC All-Region Squad
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a standout senior season that saw him lead the MIT men’s basketball team in scoring and rebounding, senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) picked up another postseason honor today when the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced its 2013 Division III All-District Teams and Coaches. Voted on by NABC member coaches in Division III, Tashman was named a first team all-district player and is the third player in program history to be selected to the prestigious NABC All-Region squad.

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – A pair of MIT men’s basketball seniors were recognized for their outstanding seasons today when the 2012-13 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Men's Basketball All-Star team was released by the organization. Seniors Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) were among six players from around the region selected to the first team.

MIT Knocked Out In First Round of NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament
ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – After a run to the Final Four a year ago, the MIT men’s basketball team saw its hopes of returning there in 2013 dashed tonight as St. Mary’s College (Md.) overcame an eight-point, second half lead by the Engineers to come away with an 85-76 win in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) went out in style in his final game for MIT, scoring a team-high 23 points.

NEWMAC Announces Winter Academic All-Conference Awards
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A league-leading 28 athletes represented MIT on the 2013 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Winter Academic All-Conference Team. Criteria includes a minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale, achieving second year academic status at his or her institution, and being a member of a varsity team for the entire season.

WELLESLEY, Mass. – A trio of MIT men’s basketball players earned honors from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference when the league announced its 2013 men’s basketball awards today. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) was named the NEWMAC Athlete of the Year, with senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) earning first team all-conference recognition and sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) getting a second team all-conference slot. MIT led the NEWMAC with its three all-conference awards.

Men’s Basketball Garners At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was good news for the MIT men’s basketball team on Monday when the Engineers heard their name called as the recipient of an at large bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. It will be the fifth consecutive season that MIT has played in the tournament, which includes a memorable run to the NCAA Final Four a year ago. The Engineers, ranked No. 24 in the final regular season poll by D3hoops.com, will play a first round game on Saturday, March 2 at No. 12 ranked St. Mary’s College in Maryland.

MIT Falls To Springfield, 68-60, at NEWMAC Tournament
WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 2 seed MIT led for most of the contest, but a scoring drought over the final five minutes proved costly for the Engineers as they fell to No. 3 seed Springfield College, 68-60, in a thriller of a semifinal game of the 2013 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) led the Engineers with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Men’s Basketball Moves Up In National Rankings, Seeded Second for NEWMAC Tournament
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT’s men’s basketball team finished the season on a roll, with its season best eight-game win streak to end the regular season enough to move the Engineers up to 19th in the latest national poll release by D3hoops.com this week. With the regular season completed, MIT will open defense of its 2012 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at the 2013 NEWMAC men’s basketball tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Kates Earns Academic All-America Recognition
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) had another honor added to his basketball resume today when the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams. Kates, the only player from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) named to the honor, was selected to the second team. Kates is the eighth player in the history of MIT men’s basketball to receive Academic All-America honors.

No. 22 MIT Rolls Past Wheelock, 76-34
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the final regular season game of the 2012-13 men’s basketball season for MIT, the No. 22 Engineers jumped out to a big lead over visiting Wheelock College and never looked back in a 76-34 win. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) recorded his third straight double-double with a career-high 28 points and 19 rebounds to lead MIT to the win.

No. 22 MIT Claims Share of NEWMAC Regular Season Title with Upset of No. 5 WPI, 69-60
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was a wild night in the Rockwell Cage where the No. 22 MIT men’s basketball team claimed at least a share of the regular season New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference title with a 69-60 upset over No. 5 WPI. Sophomore Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) came off the bench to hit on 6-of-8 three-point attempts and led the Engineers with a career-high 20 points.

Tashman’s Double-Double Leads MIT Past Clark, 69-44
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After being off since last week due to the past weekend’s snow storm, the No. 22 MIT men’s basketball team did not seem to be fazed by their unexpected layoff as the Engineers led from wire to wire in 69-44 win over Clark University in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) continued his hot play in the final weeks of the season, as he matched his previous career-high with 26 points and set a new career mark with 20 rebounds. His first rebound of the game set a new MIT career record as he broke the old mark of 954 held by Peter Jackson ’76.

MIT Holds Off Comeback Attempt by Babson in 69-53 Victory
BABSON PARK, Mass. – With the end of the regular season in sight, the No. 23 MIT men’s basketball team took to the road for the final time in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play tonight, taking on a determined Babson College squad. The Engineers started quickly and held a 26-point advantage in the second half before holding off a charge by the Beavers to win their fifth straight game. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) continued his strong play of late, leading MIT with 17 points.

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week the league announced today, the second week in a row he has been named to the honor. Tashman helped MIT to a pair of NEWMAC wins last week, averaging 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds as the Engineers moved into second place in the league standings.

MIT Pulls Away From Springfield Down the Stretch for 68-59 Victory
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a battle for sole possession of second-place in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference men’s basketball standings, MIT pulled away from Springfield College over the last five minutes of the contest to take a 68-59 victory. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) led the way for the Engineers with his ninth double-double of the season, netting 21 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Kates Named to Academic All-District Team
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) was honored for his academic and athletic achievements today with his selection to the 2012-13 Capitol One Academic All-District Men’s Basketball team released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today. Kates was the only player from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) to be named to the honor.

Balanced Attack Leads MIT Past Wheaton, 70-57
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Led by sophomore Paul Dawson’s (Stone Mountain, Ga.) career-high 14 points, the MIT men’s basketball team used a balanced attack that saw five players reach double figures in a 70-57 win over Wheaton College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. Led by Dawson, the Engineers received 31 points from its bench, outscoring the Lyons bench by 17, as they won their third straight game.

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week the league announced today. Tashman was a key performer in a pair of conference road wins for the Engineers last week, averaging 19.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in victories over Clark University and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) and sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) each recorded double-doubles to lead MIT past Coast Guard, 92-66, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference men’s basketball game this afternoon. The Engineers ran out to a 23-point halftime lead and never looked back as they placed 12 players in the scoring column.

WORCESTER, Mass. – After trailing by one at the half, the MIT men’s basketball team came out and outscored Clark University by six in the second half to come away with a 55-50 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference victory. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) picked up a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) came off the bench to score 16 for the Engineers. DJ Bailey led Clark with 15 points.

Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short at WPI, 65-59
WORCESTER, Mass. – After playing No. 6 WPI close for most of the game, the MIT men’s basketball team saw the Engineers pull away late on their home court to take a 65-59 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference win. MIT trailed by just four with two minutes left, but WPI outscored MIT, 10-8, in the final two minutes to hold off the Engineers and remain undefeated.

Burke’s Three In Final Seconds Lifts MIT Past Babson, 69-64
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With the score tied at 64-64 and time winding down, senior James Burke (Scotch Plains, N.J.) nailed a three-pointer with three seconds left to lift the MIT men’s basketball team past Babson College, 69-64. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) led all scorers for MIT with 22 points, while junior Kelly Ross (Furlong, Pa.) led four Babson players in double figures with 17 points.

MIT Rolls Past Coast Guard, 83-45
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior James Burke (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored a career-high 24 points and senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) added 23 to lead the MIT men’s basketball team to an 83-45 win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy this evening. In the first home New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game of the season for the Engineers they were nearly unstoppable, shooting 70 percent from the floor, including hitting on 10 of 14 three-point attempts.

Late Surge Lifts Springfield Past MIT, 56-53
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield College used a late surge to overcome a five-point MIT lead with three minutes left to come away with a 56-53 win in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference men’s basketball play this evening. Senior James Burke (Scotch Plains, N.J.) hit 5-of-10 three-point attempts and led the Engineers with 18 points.

Redfield Earns Second Straight NEWMAC Player of the Week Award
WELLESELY, Mass. – Sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) has made it back-to-back New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week awards as he was named to the honor today by the league office. Redfield averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds in a pair of games for MIT since December 17, both victories for the Engineers.

NORTON, Mass. – It was the start of New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play for the MIT men’s basketball team this afternoon and the Engineers kicked things off with a solid effort, rolling past Wheaton by a final of 84-47. Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) scored 20 points and sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) established a new career best with 19 points to help MIT improve to 10-2 and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.

LA VERNE, Calif. – Playing in his home state of California, sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) recorded his first career double-double with career bests of 19 points and 15 rebounds, and the Engineers held off a late rally by La Verne University as they took a 77-74 non-conference men’s basketball win.

Redfield Named NEWMAC Player of the Week
WELLESELY, Mass. – A career night for MIT men’s basketball sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) last week has earned him the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors the league announced today. It is the first career Player of the Week award for Redfield as well as the first time in the 2012-13 season that an Engineer has been selected for the honor.

MIT Surges Past Bridgewater State, 74-61
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Playing for the last time before final exams, MIT’s men’s basketball team shook off losses in its last two road games and shot 64 percent at Bridgewater State as the Engineers took a 74-61 victory over the Bears. Sophomore Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) scored a career-high 18 points for MIT as the Engineers improved to 8-2 on the season. Bridgewater State fell to 3-5 with the loss.

Men’s Basketball Upended at Salem State
SALEM, Mass. – Salem State used a second half 13-2 run to pull away from MIT and break open a close game as the Vikings went on to take an 82-77 men’s basketball win over the Engineers. Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) had a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds for No. 18 MIT, with senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) adding 20 points.

Engineers Hold Off UMass Boston, 54-44
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite a 20-5 second-half run by UMass Boston, the nationally-ranked No. 18 MIT men’s basketball emerged with a 54-44 victory on Tuesday night. Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) led all scorers with 19 points as the Engineers improved to 7-1 on the year. Junior Rahshjeem Benson (Boston, Mass.) compiled 13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks for the Beacons who saw their ledger lower to 5-3 this season.

MIT Men’s Basketball Rolls Past Newbury, 91-76
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) had a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds as MIT rolled past Newbury College, 91-76. It was a good afternoon for three-point shooting in Rockwell Cage as the Engineers shot 50 percent from behind the arc and the Nighthawks hit 48 percent of their attempts, led by a 7-of-10 performance by senior Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.), who finished with 25 points.

Men’s Basketball Drops First Decision of Season at Rhode Island College
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In an early-season battle of undefeated men’s basketball teams, Rhode Island College shut down the MIT offense in the first half as the Anchormen turned a 22-point halftime bulge into a 66-44 victory over the top-ranked Engineers. Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) scored more than half of MIT’s points, finishing with 27 for a second straight game.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) scored a season-high 27 points to help No. 1 ranked MIT to a 70-60 victory over nearby rival Tufts University in men’s basketball action in the Rockwell Cage. The Engineers held the Jumbos to just 36 percent shooting as they improved to 5-0 with the victory.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Trailing at the half by six, MIT outscored Curry College 41-27 in the second half to erase the deficit and come away with a 71-63 win in non-conference men’s basketball action in Rockwell Cage this afternoon. Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) scored 13 of his 22 points in the second half to help the top-ranked Engineers hold off the upset attempt by the Colonels.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Top-ranked MIT rolled out to an early 8-0 lead and never looked back as the Engineers led from wire to wire in an 86-53 win over Emmanuel College in men’s basketball action in the Rockwell Cage. MIT (3-0) saw 12 players on its roster get in the scoring column, led by senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) who turned in his third straight 20-point effort with 23.

WENHAM, Mass. – Trailing by a point midway through the second half, MIT put together a 7-0 run that put the Engineers in the lead for good as they defeated Gordon College by a final of 64-53. Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) led all scores for the No. 1 ranked Engineers with 23 points, with senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) picking up his first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, MIT kicked off the men’s basketball season this evening with a convincing, 82-49, win on the road against Lesley University. Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) led an MIT offense that shot 53 percent with 22 points, finishing as one of four Engineers in double figures in the contest. And with his first basket in the second half, senior Will Tashman (Atherton, Calif.) became the 26th player in MIT history to reach 1,000 points in the victory.

Harvard Pulls Away in Second Half to Down MIT, 69-54
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT started its men’s basketball season in the same fashion as a year ago, taking their neighbors along the Charles River, Harvard University in a game that was an exhibition on the MIT schedule and a regular season game on the Harvard slate. MIT came out strong with a 10-0 run to start the game, but Harvard eventually came back after its slow start to claim a 69-54 win. Senior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J.) led all scorers with 20 points for the Engineers.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of seniors on the MIT men’s basketball team have been recognized as players to watch in the upcoming 2012-13 basketball season. Seniors Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J) and Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, Utah) were both named to the preseason All-America team by D3hoops.com.

MIT Men’s Basketball Gets No. 1 Ranking In Preseason Poll
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After a record breaking season that saw the MIT men’s basketball team finish 29-2, a school record for wins, advance to the NCAA Final Four and finish the season No. 3 in the final polls, the Engineers have been selected as the 2012-13 preseason No. 1 team in the nation. In the preseason poll released by D3hoops.com, MIT picked up 12 first place votes and 594 total points.

MIT Announces 2012-13 Men’s Basketball Schedule
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Coming off a record-setting season that saw the MIT men’s basketball team reach the NCAA Division III Final Four, the Engineers will begin their quest to repeat as New England Women’s and Men's Athletic Conference champions and gain another trip to the NCAA Tournament in November. MIT will officially open the 2012-13 season on November 15 with a game at Lesley, the first of a 24-game regular season schedule released today.
