Boston, Mass. (February 28) -- MIT sophomore AJ Jurko (Weston, Fla.) and senior Tim Butala (Monroe, Conn.) have both been named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams. Jurko is a First Team honoree and is the league's Defensive Player of the Year, while Butala earned Second Team All-Conference accolades. In addition, Jurko has been named to the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
MIT's first Defensive Player of the Year honoree, Jurko also earns All-Conference honors for the first time in his career. A one-time NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week, Jurko started all 27 games while averaging 11.6 points per game and shooting a team-best 45.5 percent from three-point land. He has posted 15 double-digit scoring games, including six out the last seven games to go along with nine multi-steal games that includes a season-high five in a road win at Emerson. Jurko also leads the Engineers with 132 assists and 37 steals overall while shooting 74.7 percent from the line and 45.3 percent overall from the field.
Butala, a team captain and the team's lone senior, picks up Second Team honors after leading his team to the NEWMAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Earning NEWMAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors, Butala started all 27 games while averaging 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. Shooting 47.6 percent from the field overall, he is also shooting 85.3 percent from the free throw line to go along with 56 assists, 23 steals and eight blocks. A CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, he has posted four double-doubles and has scored in double figures in 24 of 27 games.
MIT is making its sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament this season and opens tournament play on Friday, March 3rd as the team travels to Susquehanna University to take on Eastern Connecticut State in a 5:30 p.m. start.
