Larry Anderson joined the MIT athletic department in 1995 as the
18th head men’s basketball coach in program history and the
fourth head coach in the modern era. Entering his 18th season at
the helm, Anderson’s coaching tenure is the second longest in
Tech’s basketball lore, while on November 29, 2008 he
surpassed legendary Jack Barry as the winningest coach in the
program’s 101-year history.
Anderson has guided MIT to NCAA tournament appearances in each of
the past four seasons, culminating in a run to the NCAA Division
III Final Four in 2012. During that time, the Engineers have also
captured three NEWMAC tournament titles and Anderson has earned a
pair of NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors. Tech has compiled a 92-25
record since 2008-09, winning 20 games each year, and set a program
record with 29 wins this past season.
During his team’s historic 2011-12 campaign, Anderson was
also selected as the Northeast regional Coach of the Year and
received the Jack Bennett Man of the Year Award from
CollegeInsider.com.
While always advocating class and discipline, Anderson’s
teams play with reckless abandon, hustling on defense and diving
for loose balls. His teams have finished above .500 eight times in
the past 10 years, including five 20-win campaigns, and posted a
.642 winning percentage since 2001.
Anderson arrived at MIT via Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss.,
where he graduated in 1986. After a senior stint as captain,
Anderson remained at his alma mater as an Assistant Coach. While
maintaining his devotion to the game of hoops and to Rust, he
eventually assumed additional roles as the Associate Director of
Athletics and Director of Student Activities.
