CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT senior Adam Gibbons scored a season-high 26 points on five three's, and added four steals to spark the Tech defense as the Cardinal and Gray took a break from conference play and defeated cross-town rival Newbury College, 79-52. Ten players played at least 10 minutes for the Engineers, who dialed in a season-best 25 points from the bench.

 

Three quick field goals gave MIT (10-9) an early 8-0 lead and quickly set the tone for the rest of the game. The Engineers were able to execute their offense with precision in the first half, benefiting from Gibbons' outstanding play as well as a hot start from Alex Krull, who scored all eight of his points in the opening period.

 

Leading, 42-23, to start the second half, MIT scored the first eight points of the frame to build its largest lead of the game. Newbury's (2-15) Arch Mitchell, an extremely athletic wing, scored 17 points to keep the battle respectable, but the Engineers attack proved too deep for the Nighthawks. Mike D'Auria followed Gibbons' lead with 18 points, Phil Murray added 10, and freshman Alex Bagley contributed a career-high nine points and five rebounds in just 10 minutes of action.

 

In addition to the 18-point effort, D'Auria tied a season-high with eight assists and pulled in six rebounds. Murray led Tech on the glass with eight caroms, while Krull added six boards to his scoring total en route to his best statistical game of the season.

 

MIT won for the fifth consecutive time against the Nighthawks dating back to the series' inaugural meeting in 2000.
