WPI Tops MIT, 72-55

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A 24-9 run that spanned 13 minutes in the second half helped power visiting WPI to a 72-55 victory over MIT in a NEWMAC men’s basketball game on Saturday. Billy Johnson recorded a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds for the Engineers (16-8, 7-4 NEWMAC), who are currently ranked No. 9 in the northeast. Adam Lirette led regionally-ranked No. 4 WPI (18-4, 9-1 NEWMAC) with 17 points.
WPI established a 9-2 lead early in the contest, but MIT narrowed the gap to two (9-7) courtesy of a three-pointer and a layup by Jamie Karraker. WPI registered an 11-3 spurt that resulted in its first double-digit advantage midway through the period. The Engineers stayed within striking distance, as another trey by Karraker cut the margin to eight (35-27) at the intermission.
MIT trailed by six on three occasions during the second half, the last at 44-38 with 16:11 on the clock. WPI responded with its pivotal run that put the game out of reach for the hosts.
Karraker finished with 15 points and five rebounds as Travis Tucker totaled nine points and five boards. Bradley Gampel dished out five assists while Patrick Sissman notched five caroms and four assists.
Jerome Kirkland totaled 16 points, four rebounds, and three steals for WPI. Jeffrey Robinson tallied 13 points off the bench as Ben Etten distributed five assists. NT Izuchi and Fernando Perez each collected four rebounds.
