NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Senior Adam Gibbons scored 25 points to lead the MIT Engineers to a 66-62 win over Roger Williams at the UMass-Dartmouth Tip-Off Tournament. MIT (1-0) will play Endicott College (1-0) in Saturday's championship final after the Gulls upended the host-Corsairs.
After two near-flawless performances in the preseason, Friday night's season-opening victory wasn't pretty for the Engineers. Roger Williams (0-1) challenged every shot, forcing MIT to just under 36 percent from the floor for the game. But despite the shooting woes, Tech used another side of its arsenal to clip the Hawks. The Engineers outrebounded Roger Williams 33-22, and scored in transition by forcing 18 turnovers.
Gibbons paved the way with 25 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Tech's senior tri-captain also added a game-high six steals and five rebounds.
As well as Gibbons played, Mike Huhs anchored the team by grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out four assists from the low-post. He also added 13 points en route to his first double-double of the season. The Engineers now face Endicott College in the tournament championship. The Gulls qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, losing to NEWMAC-rival Babson College.
