CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT men's heavyweight crew team opened the spring portion of its season on a blue-skied Saturday morning against Boston College and Bates College at home on the Charles River, racing in its first regatta in over four months. The Engineers fielded three boats, two of which were Varsity 8's and one Varsity 4. All three of them finished fastest in their respective heats.
MIT's Varsity 8 A boat, which set out early that morning, completed the course in 6:21.0, finishing just ahead of Bates with a 6:23.6 and Boston College with a 6:42. The B boat, which was sent out soon after the first heat, finished with a time of 6:24. Boston College's B and C boats followed with times of 6:25 and 6:33 and Bates' B and C boats completed the course with times of 6:40 and 6:55.
In the Varsity 4, it was a race between MIT, Bates and the clock, with the Cardinal and Gray finishing the course in 7:32.9 and Bates coming in soon after with a time of 7:44.6.
Next Saturday, the Engineers will travel to Worcester, Mass. to race on Lake Quinsigamond against Holy Cross and Columbia University, with the regatta starting at 7:20 a.m.
