CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT's heavyweight crew team officially opened the spring season on Saturday morning against Bates College and Boston College. Tech entered three crews in the event: two Varsity 8 boats and a Varsity 4.
What started as a calm day soon turned choppy, with winds picking up throughout the race. Tech's Varsity 8 recorded the fastest time out of the three teams, completing the 2000m course in 6:00.9. Boston College followed soon after with a 6:05.9 and Bates finished with a time of 6:07.9. MIT's second Varsity 8 also clocked the fastest time, ending up with a time of 6:16.8 compared to Boston College's 6:22.1 and Bates' time of 6:32.4.
Having not entered a boat in the third Varsity 8, the Engineers' last event was the Varsity 4. Bates finished just a second ahead of MIT, recording a time of 7:25, while Tech completed the course in 7:26.1. Boston College wrapped up the event with an 8:05.
Next up for the Cardinal and Gray is the Alumni Cup, which will take place at Columbia University on Saturday, April 5.
