Mixed Results for Tech Heavies at Cochrane and Jablonic Cups

May 4, 2009

CHICAGO, Ill. - A full day of racing on Chicago's Cal Sag Canal yielded mixed results for MIT's men's heavyweight crew. In their first race - the Cochrane Cup - Tech's varsity boat had one its best races of the year, beating Dartmouth by nine seconds and finishing only 2.8 seconds behind defending national champion and current nationally-ranked No. 1 Wisconsin.

Later that afternoon in the Jablonic Cup, Tech's shell was swamped by a motorboat wake on the way to the starting line. Following frantic bailing and a delayed start, the Engineers raced poorly and finished well behind Wisconsin and Boston University.

Tech's freshman crew continued to show good speed, finishing second to Wisconsin in their morning race by .8 seconds and beating George Washington in the afternoon by six seconds.

Next up for MIT crew is its league championship, the EARC Sprints, on May 10. Results of that race will determine which EARC crews are invited to the IRA national championships in Sacramento in June.
