CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT men's lightweight crew began its spring season Saturday with positive but mixed results against Dartmouth College and University of Pennsylvania. In a light headwind and slightly choppy water, the Engineers posted their first win for 2010 in the Freshmen Eights event while the Varsity squad lost to both the Quakers and the Big Green.
In the varsity tilt, MIT lost ground in the second half of the race, finishing third (6:30.4) behind Penn (6:24.5) and Dartmouth (6:22.4). But the team was bolstered by a strong performance from the freshmen who posted a winning time of 6:38.2, ahead of an exciting finish between Dartmouth (6:42.7) and Pennsylvania (6:42.9). The Engineers led from the start and took a strong boat-length advantage at the midway point of the race which they did not relinquish.
MIT's fours recorded a solid performance, finishing behind Dartmouth in the Second Freshman Fours event and behind Penn in the Third Varsity Fours race.
The Engineers host Yale University and guest Georgetown University on Saturday, April 10 in the 38th running of the Joy Cup.
