WORCESTER, Mass. - The MIT men's lightweight crew team entered four boats in the 2013 Eastern Sprints Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday morning. Finishing highest for the Engineers were their varsity eight and second varsity eight boats that both came in seventh place overall in their respective heats.
MIT started the regatta off well with a fourth place finish in heat two of the second varsity eight race with a time of 6:42.862. Harvard took the win in this one with a 6:29.358 and was followed by Cornell in 6:30.188 and Yale with a time of 6:33.376. The Cardinal and Gray edged Penn, Dartmouth and Georgetown to take seventh place overall.
In the third varsity race, MIT completed the course with a time of 6:36.221, taking fourth in its heat and eighth in the event. Cornell and Columbia took first and second with times of 6:15.606 and 6:19.201 respectively. The Engineers finished just behind Princeton with a 6:30.804 and left a sizeable gap between themselves and Dartmouth, who stopped the clock in 6:52.991.
Racing in the first of two heats, the MIT varsity 8 boat came in fifth with a 6:30.591, just shy of finishing before Georgetown who completed the event with a time of 6:30.462. Tech finished ahead of Princeton, Penn and Navy to take seventh.
MIT will close its season at the IRA Regatta on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif., which will take place from Friday through Sunday, May 31-June 2.
