Bitten by the rowing bug his first time in a shell, Matt founded his high school's team at Huron H.S. in Ann Arbor, Mich., to provide an outlet for this rowing addiction.
Berean continued his development rowing for Wisconsin, where he captured a bronze medal at the IRA's, before moving into the coaching arena. He coached junior and club programs in Michigan for eight years. While coaching at Huron H.S., his team won five state championships and three Midwest championships.
At the Detroit Boat Club, Matt's crews won three Midwest championships and medalled twice at the USRA Youth Invitational Regatta. More recently while coaching Community Rowing Inc. in Boston, Berean's crews medalled at the Northeast Regionals and won at the Independence Day Regatta. When not coaching he still manages to squeeze in a bit of training.
In fall 2003, Matthew joined the MIT crew as the assistant varsity heavyweight coach. He took over the position of freshman lightweight coach in fall 2004.
