MIT Lightweights Close Out Spring Slate with EARC Victory

May 4, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The MIT lightweight varsity crew capped its 2008 regular season with a win against Pennsylvania. Taking the lead in the first 30 strokes and never relinquishing it, the varsity rowed the Schuylkill course in a time of 5:48.1 to the Quakers 5:49.0.

At 700 meters the Engineers commanded a boat length lead that would require considerable determination to sustain. As the crews completed 1000m, Penn began a gritty charge in the second half of the race.

Penn and MIT sparred throughout the tilt with Penn making impressive moves to narrow the margin to four seats in the final quarter. In the last 300 meters, both crews raised their stroke rates and intensity but it was MIT who was able to rebuff moves by Penn to ensure the win.

In the freshman race, the Engineers conceded an aggressive start by the Quakers that ended up making the difference. At the half way point, it was Penn by a little more than a boat length. In the second half, MIT worked hard to get overlap with about 800 meters to go, but could not overcome the early race deficit. Penn finished the circuit in 6:02.2 while MIT closed in 6:06.8.

Next race for MIT Lightweight Men is the Eastern Sprints Regatta held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester on Sunday May 18.
