Tech Lightweights Off To A Strong Start In 2007
Oct. 1, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The start of the 2007-08 season for the MIT lightweights begins with many new faces at the Pierce Boathouse. The fall 2007 edition of the varsity squad is the largest returning class of varsity athletes to return in six years with only two seniors graduating from last years varsity eight.
In addition to the necessary development of improving depth, this year's team has continued to develop a higher level of experience through successes at national and international rowing events this past summer, which is sure to have a positive impact on their mates. Filling out the roster is a strong and eager class of sophomores who saw solid performances last year at the EARC sprints and IRA regatta.
"Our goal this fall is to combine the long term effort of the current seniors with the depth and athleticsm of the sophomore class" says Head Coach Ted Benford.
The team is preparing for the first contest of the fall season, the 43rd annual Head of the Charles. The varsity will be competing in the men's lightweight event against EARC rivals and a strong international contingent of lightweight teams.
With the addition of Andy Hilton to the full time coaching staff, the freshman squad is moving forward with excellent leadership. Combining a strong recruited class with another deep contingent of walk-on athletes, the class of 2011 hopes to exceed the standards set last year for speed and depth.
"The freshmen have responded very positively to the high standards that Coach Hilton brings to MIT. Even though the season is just underway, Andy has made a considerable contribution to the program and has had a really positive impact on the future direction of MIT lightweight crew" noted Benford.
The top eight freshmen lightweights will start their collegiate rowing career at the Head of the Charles competing in the men's club eight event on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Helping with the freshmen this year is Dhru Boddupali (MIT '07). Dhru was a four year letter winner for the Cardinal and Gray and will assist Coach Hilton with the development of his young squad.
