Men’s Fencing Opens Season at The Big One
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Sophomore Joseph Rafidi (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman David Wyrobnik (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) finished first and eighth, respectively in the epee division as the MIT men's fencing team kicked off the 2011-12 campaign at The Big One Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday.
Rounding out the epee squad was junior Jackson Crane (San Francisco, Calif.) in 25th place, sophomore Neil Fitzgerald (Eden Prairie, Minn.) in 49th, and Gabriel Karpman (Brookline, Mass.) in 52nd place.
Seniors Benjamin Nield (Preston, Wash.) and Daniel Levine (Succasunna, N.J.) finished 11th and 12th while junior Alexander Siy (Feura Bush, N.Y.) was 16th in the foil competition. Freshmen Daniel Mendelsohn (New York, N.Y.) and Daniel Lizardo (Pasadena, Calif.) ranked 31st and 53rd while senior Siraj Ali (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore James Clark (Falls Church, Va.) were 61st and 66th, respectively.
In his intercollegiate debut, sophomore Ehsan Izadmehr (Wayne, N.J.) finished 18th in sabre action. Senior Vinayak Ramesh (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) placed 32nd, followed by junior Nathan Arce (Madison, Ala.) in 38th. Freshman Luke O'Malley (Los Angeles, Calif.) was 49th while junior Alexis Hakimi (Tarzana, Calif.) came in right behind him. Sophomore Ryan Lacey (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Dwayne George (Freeport, N.Y.) wrapped up the outing with rankings of 61st and 77nd.
