Rafidi Earns NCAA Elite 89 Award for Men's Fencing
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Carrying a 5.0 GPA, MIT senior Joey Rafidi (Los Angeles, Calif.) was presented with the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the NCAA Fencing National Championship held this past weekend at Ohio State. He is the sixth MIT student-athlete and first fencer to receive this accolade since it was established during the 2009-10 academic year.

Joey Rafidi Captures Ninth Place at NCAA Fencing Championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second year in a row MIT senior Joey Rafidi (Los Angeles, Calif.) secured ninth place in the epee portion of the NCAA Fencing National Championship hosted by Ohio State on Sunday. The lone Division III qualifier in a field of 24 participants, he earned All-America honorable mention accolades to become the eighth fencer in program history to accomplish this feat.

Rafidi and Avery to Represent MIT at NCAA Fencing Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second year in a row, senior Joey Rafidi (Los Angeles, Calif.) will represent MIT at the NCAA Fencing Championship and he will be joined by freshman Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) at the competition scheduled to begin this Thursday at Ohio State. Qualifiers for epee and sabre, Rafidi and Avery are the lone Division III participants in their respective weapons.

Joey Rafidi Secures Second Place at NCAA Fencing Regional
WELLESLEY, Mass. – At the NCAA Northeast Fencing Regional hosted by Wellesley College on Sunday, MIT senior Joey Rafidi (Los Angeles, Calif.) was the runner-up in the epee competition. The best finish for this weapon in the history of the men’s fencing program, Rafidi will return to the NCAA Championship which will be held March 20-23.

Rafidi, Epee Team Finish First at New England Championship
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Senior Joey Rafidi (Los Angles, Calif.) captured MIT’s first individual epee title at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championship since 1995 while the epee team finished atop the standings for the first time in five years on Saturday. Freshman Benjamin Lin (Beaverton, Ore.) was third in the sabre competition as sophomore Scott Robinson (Califon, N.J.) finished fifth in foil action, helping the Engineers claim the runner-up spot among 11 teams.

Men's Fencing Collects NFC All-Star Accolades
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – A pair of first-time honorees represented the MIT men’s fencing team on the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) All-Star Team as announced by the league on Monday. Freshman Benjamin Lin (Beaverton, Ore.) secured a spot on the Sabre First Team while sophomore Giulio Gueltrini (Ravenna, Italy) was tabbed to the Epee Second Team.

Engineers Defeat BC at the Beanpot
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men’s fencing team closed out the regular season by defeating Boston College, 16-11, in the final round of the Beanpot on Wednesday night. Earlier in the evening, the Engineers (16-12) fell to Brandeis University, 18-9, and Harvard, 20-7. With five athletes in action, the epee squad amassed a ledger of 19-8 as it blanked BC and edged out Brandeis and Harvard by a 5-4 margin.

MIT Tops Air Force at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. – In its push towards the post season, the MIT men’s fencing team squared off against a highly competitive field at the Duke University Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers (15-10) defeated the U.S. Air Force Academy (14-13) but fell to UNC (17-10), the host Blue Devils (19-8), Johns Hopkins University (19-8), and Brandeis University (16-11). The epee team had the best outing for the Cardinal and Gray as it compiled a ledger of 24-21, followed by the sabre squad at 15-30, and the foil contingent at 12-33.

Men’s Fencing Dominates at Eric Sollee Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. – For the second week in a row, the MIT men’s fencing team put together an unblemished outing as it compiled a 5-0 record at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers defeated Stevens Institute of Technology (15-12), Hunter College (24-3), New Jersey Institute of Technology (20-7), NYU (18-9), and Haverford College (17-10) to improve to 14-6 on the season. Freshman Benjamin Lin (Beaverton, Ore.) finished undefeated in back-to-back competitions as he turned in a 14-0 sabre performance while sophomore Giulio Gueltrini (Ravenna, Italy) led the epee team with a tally of 11-4. Sophomore Scott Robinson (Califon, N.J.) once again paced the foil squad as he finished with a 10-5 mark.

Tech Goes 5-0 at Men's NFC Competition
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The MIT men’s fencing team went 5-0 in the second Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition of the season on Saturday. Returning to action following a lengthy hiatus, the Engineers (9-6, 8-2 NFC) defeated host Boston College (16-11), Vassar College (16-11), Dartmouth College (15-12), Tufts University (22-5), and Brown University (15-12). Freshman Benjamin Lin (Beaverton, Ore.) turned in a 15-0 sabre performance while sophomores Dinis Cheian (Chisinau, Moldova) and Scott Robinson (Califon, N.J.) both went 11-4 for the epee and foil units, respectively.

Engineers Edge Out Johns Hopkins, 14-13, at Brandeis Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. – Facing its toughest competition of the season thus far, the MIT men’s fencing team went 1-4 at the Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers defeated Johns Hopkins University (14-13) but fell to Yale University (17-10), Brown University (17-10), Columbia University (19-8), and St. John’s University (20-7).

MIT Men’s Fencing Picks Up Three Wins in NFC Action
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In its first Northeast Fencing Conference competition of the season, the MIT men’s fencing team went 3-2 at Brown University on Saturday. The Engineers (3-2) overpowered Boston University (23-4), UMass Amherst (23-4), and University of New Hampshire (20-7) but fell to Brandeis University (15-12) and Sacred Heart University (17-10).

Men's Fencing Earns Three Medals at The Big One
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – For the third year in a row, senior Joey Rafidi (Los Angeles, Calif.) captured the epee title at The Big One Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday. Sophomore Dinis Cheian (Chisinau, Moldova) was tied for third in the epee standings as freshman Benjamin Lin (Beaverton, Ore.) claimed the same spot in the sabre competition.
