CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its first competition since the holiday break, the MIT men’s fencing team collected three wins while Matt Gethers compiled a 12-0 mark at Saturday’s Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) meet hosted by Brown University. The Engineers defeated Boston College (18-9), Tufts University (20-7), and Dartmouth College (23-4) before falling to Vassar College (15-12) and the host Bears (17-10). The Cardinal and Gray closed out its NFC slate with a 6-4 record while its overall mark moved to 6-10.
Behind Gethers’ stellar outing, the epee squad amassed a ledger of 34-11 which included a pair of 9-0 decisions over BC and Dartmouth. Carter Chang finished with a total of 11-3 while Gabriel Chan went 8-6. Javier Ordonez rounded out MIT’s contingent with a 3-2 record.
The foil team notched a total of 26-19, which featured 8-1 wins over Tufts and Dartmouth. Benjamin Nield led the way with a mark of 10-5 as Daniel Levine finished at 8-7. Richard LaGrandier turned in a 6-6 outing while Benjamin Switala won two of his three bouts.
Courtesy of 6-3 victories over Tufts and Dartmouth, the sabre squad came away with a 23-22 record. Igor Kopylov posted a ledger of 9-6, followed by Rangarajan Nadadur (8-7), Vinayak Ramesh (1-1), and Maximilian Brand (5-8).
