MIT Competes Against Nationally-Ranked Foes in Eric Sollee Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In its final dual competition of the season, the MIT men's fencing team compiled a 2-4 mark at its own Eric Sollee Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers defeated Haverford College (16-11) and Yeshiva University (25-2), but fell to NYU (18-9), nationally-ranked No. 5 Princeton University (17-10), No. 6 University of Pennsylvania (16-11), and No. 10 Duke University (18-9). The Cardinal and Gray finished its regular season with an overall record of 8-14.

The epee team led the way with a 30-24 performance, which featured an 8-1 ledger against Yeshiva and a 7-2 victory over Princeton. Carter Chang, Gabriel Chan, and Matt Gethers each registered records of 10-8.

Benjamin Nield paced the foil team with a total of 11-7 as Daniel Levine notched a mark of 10-8. Richard LaGrandier and Benjamin Switala rounded out the contingent with records of 5-10 and 1-2, respectively. The Cardinal and Gray went 27-27 on the day, including a sweep of Yeshiva and a 7-2 outing versus Haverford.

Igor Kopylov's tally of 12-6 helped power the sabre squad to a 23-31 ledger. Rangarajan Nadadur finished at 6-12 while Maximilian Brand posted a mark of 5-13. The trio's best outing was an 8-1 victory over Yeshiva.
