CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT men's fencing team finished in third place at the New England Championship on Saturday. Brandeis University and Boston College tied for the top spot as they posted nine more wins than the Engineers.
Igor Kopylov collected his second consecutive sabre title as he edged out Malcom Conley (Boston College) by scoring two more touches en route to a 9-2 mark. Namit Setia placed fifth in the "B" pool with a 6-5 total while Raymond Wu finished third at 8-2 in the "C" pool. As a team, the sabre squad placed second with a ledger of 23-9.
Sebastian Castro's tally of 10-1 in the "C" pool lifted the foil team to a third-place finish and a 26-7 total. Spencer Sugimoto and Jason Chen both recorded marks of 8-3, with Sugimoto placing fourth in the top tier and Chen capturing fifth in the "B" pool.
The epee team placed fourth with an overall record of 20-12. Trevor Chang finished fourth (6-5), as Gabriel Chan took third place in the "B" pool with an 8-3 total. Matt Gethers rounded out the squad with a 6-4 record, good for a third-place ranking.
