BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College men's lacrosse team defeated visiting MIT, 15-9 on Saturday afternoon in a Pilgrim League contest at MacDowell Field. Nine different Beavers scored in the win including James Schmidt, who led all players with four goals and one assist. With the win, Babson improved to 9-5 on the season and 4-1 in the Pilgrim League. MIT saw its record move to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the Pilgrim League.
The Beavers came out strong scoring the first four goals of the game, taking the commanding lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. Cam Caruso, Alex Patinkin and two from Schmidt built the early advantage. MIT's Dan Piemont put the Engineers on the board at the 5:11 mark with a goal off a pass from Nick Sisler. The two teams then traded goals once more to end the quarter including a remarkable shot from MIT goalkeeper Christopher Rullan with one second remaining from his defensive end. Babson entered the first break with the 5-2 lead.
The hosts scored four of the five second-quarter goals including an unassisted tally from Travis Clarke. Schmidt chipped in two more goals during this span and Babson's Armand Wilson added one to give the Beavers a 9-3 advantage at halftime. Sisler found Piemont for MIT's lone goal of the period.
Babson scored twice during the opening minute of the third quarter, but MIT responded with a pair of its own goals. John Kucharczyk's solo effort was followed Gabe Blanchet's man-up tally that was set up by Corey Garvey. The Beavers registered back-to-back markers to increase their margin to 13-5. Garvey picked up his second point of the day courtesy of an unassisted goal with six seconds on the clock.
The Beavers tacked on two more goals, with their last tally coming at the 8:39 mark of the final frame. MIT closed the gap with three scores during the last 3:34 of the game. Blanchet found the back of the net while Carl Tilbury connected on a feed from Kucharczyk for an extra-man goal. Garth Grove wrapped up the game with his first goal of the season.
Patinkin, Caruso and Thomas Mallon finished with two goals each as Patinkin chipped in with two assists. Wilson tallied one goal, three assists, and five groundballs. Clarke, Ryan Kucinski, Paul Grip, and Andrew Packer each finished with one goal. Defensively Babson was led by Christian Ebert who picked up a game high eight groundballs and Benjamin Jette who added five groundballs. Michael Griffin won seven of nine face-offs to lead all players.
Piemont and Gabe Blanchet each tallied two goals for MIT. Rullan, Garvey, Tilbury, Grove, and Kucharczyk each contributed a goal. Justin Myers led the Engineers with four groundballs.
Babson's three goalkeepers all saw time in net with Mike Saucier earning the win making four saves. Ryan Lee finished with four saves and no goals against in just over ten minutes of play while Jay Whalen had two saves. MIT goalkeeper Rullan finished with 17 total saves playing all 60 minutes for the Engineers.
