CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Alex Andrzejewski intercepted a pass at midfield and found Dan Piemont for the game-winning goal with three seconds left in overtime to give MIT an 8-7 victory over Norwich University in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League contest on Wednesday. Piemont finished with four goals as the Engineers improved to 7-6 on the year and 3-3 in conference play. Jesse Mattson notched three goals and an assist for the Cadets (8-7, 1-5 Pilgrim).
Carl Tilbury put the Cardinal and Gray on the board first with an unassisted marker after 1:32 expired. Piemont extended MIT's advantage just over four minutes later when he connected on a feed from Tom Hay. Mattson ended the shutout with a solo effort late in the frame.
The Engineers gained some breathing room in the second quarter when Piemont redirected a pass from Corey Garvey to go up, 3-1. Norwich responded with three straight goals to enter the break with a 4-3 edge. Kyle Marzeoti started the spurt as Michael White followed with back-to-back unassisted tallies.
The Cadets carried the momentum into the second half as Mattson scored on a pass from Justin Pearson after 1:45 elapsed. Both sides struggled to find the back of the net until Garvey struck for MIT at the 6:18 mark. Gabe Blanchet then set up John Kucharczyk, which evened the score at five. Mattson quickly put Norwich in front, but Piemont's man-up goal resulted in another deadlock.
The visitors inched ahead one minute into the fourth quarter as Joe Galante converted a feed from Mattson. Garvey registered the equalizer on a pass by Tilbury with 11:14 on the clock. The game became a defensive battle as both sides were plagued by turnovers. The Cadets regained possession with 3:56 remaining in regulation and proceeded to rattle off eight shots, two of which were stopped by MIT goalie Christopher Rullan. The Engineers were unsuccessful on their clearing attempt, relinquishing the ball with 23 seconds to go. Norwich was unable to put a shot on net during the waning seconds, forcing the extra session.
Garvey compiled two goals, one assists, five groundballs, and went 6-of-7 in his faceoff attempts. Tilbury posted a goal and an assist while Kucharczyk chipped in one goal. Blanchet, Andrzejewski, and Hay each earned an assist as Eric Zuk totaled five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Rullan finished the day with eight saves and seven groundballs.
White bolstered the Cadets' attack with two goals as Marzeoti went 10-of-16 in faceoffs. Galante and Marzeoti both contributed a goal while Pearson picked up an assist. Patrick Sikora recorded six groundballs followed by four from Chris Yodonis. Nick Talcott forced a pair of turnovers as Nathan Proctor collected 11 saves.
Both squads conclude conference play at home on Saturday, May 1. MIT will host Clark University while Norwich will take on Wheaton College.
