BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College scored after 41 seconds expired and never looked back as it went on to defeat MIT, 14-6, in a Pilgrim League men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Junior Gabe Blanchet (Hadley, Mass.) paced the Engineers with two goals and an assist to go along with four groundballs.
The Beavers recorded two goals in the first quarter and added another early in the second frame. A defensive battle ensued until Blanchet connected on a feed from junior Mike Gibson (Natick, Mass.) with 3:35 left in the period. Babson responded by scoring four straight goals to enter halftime with a 7-1 advantage.
The hosts extended their margin after 1:08 elapsed in the third quarter, but on a clearing attempt sophomore Elliot Sykora (Wilmette, Ill.) found the back of the net. Babson countered by registering five unanswered goals to build a 13-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Beavers notched their final marker with 13:33 left to play; however, MIT generated the last four goals of the day. Blanchet started the run with an unassisted strike which was followed by senior Ernie Park (Plainsboro, N.J.) setting up sophomore Tim Wilczynski (Old Lyme, Conn.). Junior Sean Burke (Centennial, Colo.) closed out the game with back-to-back goals with Blanchet and Park earning the assists.
Sophomore Ben Hessels (Laytonsville, Md.) collected a team-high six groundballs followed by five from classmate Joel Santisteban (Lawrence, N.Y.). Sykora and senior Bryan Beller (Dix Hills, N.Y.) both tallied five groundballs and four caused turnovers while Wilczynski added four groundballs. In net, junior Christopher Rullan (Wexford, Pa.) amassed 21 saves.
MIT (4-6, 0-2 Pilgrim) continues its road trip on Wednesday, April 18 at league foe Regis College.
