NEWTON, Mass. – MIT senior Joel Santisteban (Lawrence, N.Y.) represented the men's lacrosse team as the lone qualifier for the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Senior Scholar Academic All-Region Team. In order to be selected for this team, graduating seniors must be in their final year of eligibility, have posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be a significant contributor on the field that resulted in a nomination for conference or regional recognition.
A first-team NEWMAC All-Conference honoree, Santisteban ranked eighth in the league in caused turnovers with 17 while collecting 36 groundballs as a close defenseman. His caused turnover total this season was the second-best in program history and will graduate tied for fourth in career caused turnovers with 36.
In addition to being a three-time Academic All-Conference selection for lacrosse, Santisteban has achieved the same accomplishment as a captain of the MIT football team. This past fall, he was tabbed for Capital One Academic All-America second-team accolades, becoming the 38th football player to receive this award. Majoring in aerospace engineering, Santisteban is also minoring in management science and carrying a concentration in economics. He completed internships with Northrup Grumman and Morgan Stanley and received the Richard B. Fischer Scholarship from Morgan Stanley as well as the Next Gen Northrup Grumman Scholarship.
