CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the Pilgrim Lacrosse League opener for both teams, Lasell College came away with a 10-9 overtime win against host MIT on Saturday. Brandon Keith tallied four goals and two assists for the Lasers (3-5, 1-0 Pilgrim), including the game-winning strike with 1:49 remaining in the extra session. Ryan Ballentine paced the Engineers (2-5, 0-1 Pilgrim) with three goals and three assists.
Dave Bulhoes opened the scoring for the visitors with back-to-back strikes as Jon Elia and Keith earned the assists. Neil Zimmerman connected on a Ballentine pass at the 8:03 mark to put MIT on the board. Keith notched a pair of unassisted goals that sandwiched a solo strike by Ballentine to give Lasell a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period.
The Engineers evened the contest midway through the second stanza courtesy of goals from Dylan Roden and Patrick Shannon. Adam Foss put the Lasers ahead, 5-4, but Ballentine found Michael Fowler for the equalizer with five minutes remaining in the half.
Keith gave Lasell a slight edge after 2:24 expired in the third quarter; however a pair of man-up goals gave MIT its first lead (7-6) with 3:57 on the clock. Ballentine converted a feed from Fowler before John Kucharczyk registered the go-ahead marker that was set up by Corey Garvey.
The Cardinal and Gray doubled its advantage when Zimmerman found Ballentine with 11:28 on the clock. The game was a defensive battle until the Lasers rattled off three straight goals in a span of 4:33. Mike Maggio assisted Ryan Koerner on the first goal at the 5:36 mark. Maggio then found the back of the net twice, the second time with 1:03 left to play. The Engineers responded with Ballentine setting up Garvey for the tying goal with 35 seconds remaining in regulation. Following the ensuing faceoff, MIT netminder Garth Grove fought off a pair of point-blank shots to preserve the deadlock and force overtime.
Midway through the extra session, Matt Stambler scooped up a groundball in Lasell’s defensive zone and sent it to Alex Engels who sprinted downfield, quickly finding Keith for the game-winning tally.
Garvey, Fowler, and Zimmerman each posted a goal and an assist as Garvey added four groundballs. Ebbe Strathairn paced the Engineers with six groundballs while Alex Andrzejewski contributed four of his own. Grove finished the day with 10 saves.
Maggio registered two goals and an assist as Bulhoes scored twice. Foss notched a game-high 14 groundballs while Stambler contributed five groundballs. In net, Mike Kelliher collected 14 saves.
Both squads continue conference play on Saturday, April 4. MIT will travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy while Lasell will host Wheaton College.
