Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Five first-period goals by host Wentworth Institute of Technology proved to be the difference in its 9-6 victory over MIT on Thursday night. Corey Garvey paced the Engineers (1-5) with two assists and a goal as Dan Piemont (two goals), Ryan Ballentine (two assists), and Dylan Roden (one goal and one assist) each added two points. Garth Grove posted 14 saves while Garvey collected a game-high 14 groundballs.

The Leopards scored three goals in a span of 1:39 to take a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter. MIT quickly narrowed the gap to one following back-to-back strikes by Piemont that were set-up by Garvey. Wentworth countered with two unanswered goals of its own to establish a 5-2 advantage at the end of the period.

Garvey connected on a pass from Ballentine with 7:33 left in the half before the Leopards found the back of the net twice to take a 7-3 halftime lead.

The Engineers provided all of the scoring in the third quarter as they cut their deficit in half (7-5). Roden found Eric Zuk after 1:19 expired and then converted a feed from Ballentine with 7:41 on the clock.

After being held scoreless for 18 minutes, Wentworth broke through with an unassisted tally early in the final frame. Mark Spadafora countered with a solo effort of his own that brought MIT within two (8-6) with 9:59 remaining. A defensive battle ensued until the Leopards wrapped up the scoring with 3:08 left to play.
