MIT Edges Out Babson, 4-3
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A pair of fourth-quarter goals helped propel MIT to a 4-3 victory over Babson College in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League game on Saturday. With the win, the Engineers improved to 5-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference play while the Beavers' ledger dipped to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in Pilgrim action.
Babson opened the scoring just over five minutes into the contest when Bryan Wilbur connected on a feed from Armand Wilson. The Beavers then increased their margin courtesy of an unassisted strike by Matt Enright with 1:14 remaining in the period.
MIT ended the shutout after 3:42 elapsed in the second stanza with Neil Zimmerman setting up Ernie Park for his 13th goal of the season. Babson countered with a solo effort by E.J. Peterson late in the quarter which eventually resulted in a 3-1 lead at halftime.
The Engineers cut their deficit in half at the 9:25 mark of the third quarter when Ryan Ballentine converted a pass from Corey Garvey. The remainder of the period was a defensive battle, maintaining the slim margin.
The Ballentine-Garvey connection returned three minutes into the final frame, evening the score at three. Both sides had several chances to record the go-ahead goal, but it was Park who found Zimmerman for the game-winning strike with 45 seconds left in regulation.
Cam Caruso led the Beavers with six groundballs, followed by Thomas Mallon (five) and Matt Harrington (four). Max Owen posted eight saves during the first half while Mike Saucier closed out the game with 10 stops.
Both squads continue conference play on Wednesday, April 15. MIT will travel to Norwich University while Babson will host Clark University.
