BOSTON, Mass. – MIT scored four second-half
goals within a span of just over 21 minutes to defeat Emerson
College, 5-2, in a non-conference contest at Emerson's Rotch Field.
Zachary Kabelac and Christian Therkelsen scored two goals each for
the Engineers, who improved to 4-2 on the year.
Emerson opened the scoring less than five minutes into the contest
when Rafael Restrepo headed in a corner kick by Eric Dabdoub.
Kabelac answered with an unassisted tally on a shot from the center
that just eluded Lions’ goalkeeper Noah Price.
The first half was extremely tight and well played as each team had
seven shots and Emerson held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Kabelac put the Engineers ahead courtesy of an unassisted tally
during a scramble in front of the net. Less than three minutes
later, Therkelsen notched an unassisted marker off a free kick.
Mike Giles cut Emerson’s deficit in half (3-2) with an
unassisted score off a rebound of MIT goalkeeper Ernesto Reza in
the 71st minute. Just over five minutes later, Kabelac set up
Therkelsen for a breakaway score. Edner Paul capped the scoring
with a breakaway of his own in the 81st minute.
The Engineers held a 14-11 edge in shots in the game and a 6-5 edge
in corner kicks. Price made five saves for Emerson, while Javier
Duarte and Reza combined for four for the Engineers.
